Jacksonville.com - A 45-year-old Jacksonville restaurateur has been arrested after more than $44,000 in sales tax from customers at a now-closed River City Marketplace eatery was never sent to the state, according to the Florida Department of Revenue.

Tony T. Nguyen, owner of Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina at 840 Nautica Drive, was charged Aug. 19 with failure to remit sales tax and made bail the next day, according to Duval County jail records.

State officials said Nguyen collected the sales tax but failed to account for it during various periods from July 2011 through June 2014, then failed to file six consecutive sales tax returns. Under state law, sales tax is the property of the state at the moment of collection. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines as well as possible repayment of stolen tax, interest, penalty and investigative costs, according to revenue officials.
